Competition team members will be placed in their respective teams. Team 1 will consist of the most experience team members. Having separate teams ensures practice times are more efficient with similar experience level athletes. This further allows our coaches to put their attention uniformly for all athletes. Each team will have one dedicated practice per week dedicated solely to their team (team 1 will have 2).

Masks are optional.

All competition team athletes need to wear the academy uniform (jacket, t-shirt, pants, sash and jacket) to every practice (no jacket in the summer). We will be selling shorts soon, date TBD. To purchase uniform please see a coach or email us at info@newushu.com to request a uniform. Starting Fall 2021, all students will need to bring their membership cards to all ONSITE classes. You will pick up the card on your first day of classes.

If you are interested in competition team, please email us at info@newushu.com to request an evaluation for competition team.

Sash levels is a rank promotion system for students in our general curriculum. Competition team members will train in very focused skills and taolu (forms). Our general curriculum is more diverse and so many of the curriculum content will NOT be covered directly in competition team. Nevertheless, because the training is rigorous - skills will improve greatly overall. Our competition team athletes generally, undergo the highest intensity training and our expectations for team members is the highest amongst all of our members.

Yes! For each family member that enrolls tuition will be discounted. 2nd sibling or family member that enrolls will enjoy a 10% discount (applied to the second family member). 3rd sibling or family member will enjoy a 20% discount (applied to both the 2nd and 3rd family member).

There are two types of USA Team Trials. Team trials selects Team USA for the following teams: Kungfu Team (traditional Wushu), Contemporary Wushu Team.

NECWA is a member school of the USAWKF, which governs the sport of Wushu in the USA. USA Team Trials is a national team selection event for Wushu athletes to represent Team USA at international events. International competitions include the World Wushu Championships, Pan-American games and more. With Youth Wushu joining the Junior Olympics, it is likely the next selection will decide who will represent team USA at this event.

Kungfu Team: This team will represent USA at the next World Kungfu Championships which has usually been held in China during the summertime.

Contemporary Wushu Team: This team will represent USA at the next World Wushu Championships and other international competitions.

At the end of each training cycle (4months-1year), athletes will participate in an in-house competition. Competition team members will compete against one another under competition scoring/rules. In order to qualify to represent NECWA at the USA Team Trials, athletes must score at least a 8.5 or higher at the latest competition.

Tuition is non-refundable after the session period has started. Tuition refunded before the session starts incurs a 3% processing fee. There are no refunds or returns accepted for equipment and/or uniform purchases. We will allow size exchanges up to 1 week of purchase.

Taolu is forms training. Form are choreographed sequence of movements to help students build up their Wushu skills. Within Taolu skills include stances, kicks, punches, jumps, weapons and tumbling skills. Taolu includes both barehand and weapons training. Taolu is great for building up youth strength, coordination, flexibility and endurance. During competition team, we will be focused on competition taolu which are typically international standard taolu practiced by athletes around the world.

No, we will not cover any Sanda skills in the Taolu competition team. Sanda skills will be covered in our general curriculum and in our new Sanda only curriculum (coming Fall 2021).

Replacement of a membership card is a 15$ fee. If you need a card replaced, please email us at info@newushu.com. Our staff will create a new card and have it ready for pick up at your next class.

All members of the competition team must arrive on time, wear their uniform, be focused, work hard and be respectful at all times during practice. At any time if any of these rules are broken, the member will receive a strike. This policy is in place to ensure training is on task, focused and members learn what type of habits it takes to excel at Wushu training. While our rules our strict to maintain productivity, our coaches will always strive to maintain a positive and understanding training environment at all times.

All competition team members are required to wear the academy uniform (jacket, t shirt, pants and sash) to every session. In the summertime, the jacket does not need to be worn. If you need to purchase a uniform you can email us at info@newushu.com

To purchase a uniform, weapons and shoes please see a coach or staff member in person at your next on-site visit. One of our staff members will advise and help you find the right size for you. Alternatively, you can email us at info@newushu.com

All competition team athletes will attend competitions as recommended by our coaches. If we are planning to attend a competition we will notify students ahead of time and plan for that competition. We will always have a mock or in-house tournament before each event. Only the USA Team Trials and National Championships will require a qualifying score at an in-house competition to compete.

All competition team athletes will track various performance metrics related to strength, flexibility, skills and more. The goal of metrics is to help track progress and to provide both athletes and coaches more information on how an athlete is growing and improving during the training cycle. Coaches will then be able to tailor and adjust training accordingly to the athletes weaknesses and strengths.

Note: We have two coaches with the same name.

Xiaoyi Chen, Head Coach

Coach Xiaoyi Chen started Wushu at the age of 8. She is a graduate of Beijing Sports University and a multiple gold medal winner in International Wushu competitions. She is the current coach of the Wellesley Wushu Team and previously a coach for the Harvard Wushu Team. Coach Xiaoyi's favorite Wushu skill is the tornado kick and aerial cartwheel!

What do you enjoy the most about teaching?
It is most wonderful to have the opportunity to see how much the students grow as they progress through their Wushu journey. Witnessing students not only develop skills in Wushu, but seeing them grow in maturity, and develop improved etiquette because of Wushu is one of the many reasons teaching is so exciting and fulfilling! Our students also all have such fun unique personalities!

Calvin Wang, Head Coach

Coach Calvin Wang started Wushu at the age of 5. He is a multiple gold medal winner in various competitions. Calvin was previously a coach of the Wellesley Wushu Team, Harvard Wushu Team and the Illiniois Wushu Team. Coach Calvin's favorite Wushu skill is the 900 Degree front sweep and 720 butterfly twist!

What do you enjoy the most about teaching?
I am lucky to have the opportunity to witness the growth of so many students, not only in Wushu, but their growth as individuals as they tackle challenges, learn to work with others and develop confidence in themselves. Seeing initial frustration transform into confidence through practice, and confidence transform into eagerness to teach and help one another is incredibly inspiring!

Dennis Chen, Coach

Coach Dennis Chen started Wushu at the age of 12. He has experience in both traditional and contemporary Wushu and was a collegiate Wushu Coach at UCLA. Coach Dennis's favorite Wushu skill is the butterfly kick!

What do you enjoy the most about teaching?
The process of teaching allows both student and coaches the grow together. It is truly satisfying to see a student land their first aerial after months of failed attempts or helping a shy student develop the confidence to perform their routine. I draw a lot of inspiration from the growth of students and I am often taught new ways of looking at old skills through teaching.
Note: We have two coaches with the same name.

Dennis Chen, Coach

Coach Dennis Chen started training martial arts at a young age. He began his martial arts training in traditional martial arts. Coach Dennis's favorite wushu skill is the 360 Lotus Kick into Kneeling stance.

What do you enjoy the most about teaching?
I enjoy passing a sense of Chinese tradition onto the next generation and watching the growth in the students I teach. Wushu is a unique sport and watching my students excel and progress in their martial arts journey is very rewarding. Watching them practice and train together is like a glance into the past of my own wushu journey.
Note: We have two coaches with the same name.
