We accept ages 3+.

Students start as young as 3. Coaches place every child in the right group by age and experience, and adults train too.

The Level Up System

Objective progress. Not guesswork.

Every student trains on Level Up, our own tracking system. Skills, ranks, points, and test results live in one place, so students always know what they have earned and families always know what comes next.

Points & rewards

Every class, completed skill, and milestone earns points students can redeem for real rewards.

Skill tracking

Each technique is tracked from first attempt to mastered — checked and verified by coaches, not guessed.

Curriculum tracking

A student's development score indicates curriculum progress — families watch it climb as skills are verified.

Promotion tests

Advancing rank takes both: a sufficient development score and a passed promotion test.

Lead & Achieve

Students become instructors.

Our youth have the chance to join Lead & Achieve — a pathway that trains dedicated students into Assistant and Instructor ranks. Real leadership, with real rewards.

Questions

What families ask first.

What is wushu — and is it the same as kung fu?

Wushu is the modern, competitive form of Chinese kung fu. It blends traditional technique with athletic training: forms (taolu), kicks, jumps, tumbling, weapons, and sanda (Chinese kickboxing).

If you searched for kung fu classes near Boston, wushu is that art trained with sport-level structure — a published curriculum, coach-verified skills, and a real competition circuit.

What ages do your youth martial arts programs start?

We accept students from age 3. Young students build coordination, flexibility, focus, and confidence first.

From there, coaches guide each student toward competition taolu, tumbling, or sanda as readiness shows. Placement is by age and experience, so a new 10-year-old and a new 5-year-old start in the right room.

Do adults and complete beginners train too?

Yes, and most adults who walk in have never trained before. Adult Wushu covers technique, forms, mobility, and conditioning at a beginner-friendly pace.

Adult Taiji is the low-impact option, built around balance, mobility, and calm focus. Sanda adds practical striking and self-defense for teens and adults, always taught with control.

Can we try a class before enrolling?

Yes. Book a trial class and we will place your child — or you — in the right group based on age and experience.

Most new families start with a trial-friendly youth class, and adults can trial an adult class the same way.

What should we wear to the first class?

Comfortable athletic clothes you can move in, and hair tied back. Bring a water bottle. That is all a trial class needs.

Once enrolled, students wear the academy uniform with their sash and proper training shoes. We will point you to the right sizes when you start.

Where are your martial arts schools located?

We train in three studios along I-95 and Route 128: Burlington at 123 Muller Rd, Wellesley at 12A Mica Ln on the Newton border, and Acton at 133 Great Rd on Route 2A.

Families reach us in minutes from Lexington, Winchester, Woburn, Bedford, Arlington, Newton, Natick, and Needham, and many travel from Concord, Lincoln, Belmont, Cambridge, Reading, and Billerica.

How do students advance?

Students climb ten sash ranks from Yellow to Gold, with three levels inside each rank. Every rank is built from skill trees a coach verifies in person.

Verified skills raise a student's Development Score, and that score plus a promotion test is what unlocks the next level. Coaches control access to weapons and competition training, so progress stays safe and earned.

How does the Competition Team work?

Competition Team is by coach recommendation, not sign-up. Most members train in the general curriculum for a year or more first.

The team competes on a real circuit: local New England events, then USAWKF national championships, and for athletes who stay the course, international competition.

Can a student train tumbling only?

Yes. Our tumbling curriculum runs Levels 1 to 10 in a dedicated tumbling facility, from first cartwheels to aerials and twists.

Dancers, cheerleaders, gymnasts, and athletes from other sports cross-train here to build acrobatic skills safely, with the strength and flexibility work that makes those skills hold up.

How often should a student train each week?

Consistency matters more than volume. Coaches recommend a weekly schedule based on the student's age, goals, and current rank.

Competition Team athletes train more often than general curriculum students. Ask a coach at your trial and we will map out what fits your family.

What happens during school vacations?

We run Wushu Weeks during February and April vacation, and weekly sessions from late June through August.

Each is a full week of skills, forms, tumbling, and games. Join one week or the whole summer.

How much does training cost?

Tuition depends on the program and how often a student trains, so we quote it once we know the right placement.

Book a trial or email info@newushu.com and we will send current rates for the classes that fit. Registration and payment run through Level Up, our training platform.
