The youth wushu general curriculum is the recommended curriculum for those new to Wushu. In this curriculum, we teach all the elements of Wushu including Taolu, Sanda, Tumbling and Self Defense. New students will begin in the yellow sash classes and will work their way towards a higher level class. At the end of each session (December in Fall, June in Spring, August in Summer) all general curriculum students will have the opportunity to test to the next sash level. Online Option: We continue to offer online classes as a significant enough portion of the population (including youth under 12) remain unvaccinated. This is the ensure access to our programs for all families and students. All enrollment options includes access to unlimited classes.

Limited Onsite Option:Our limited onsite includes 5x classes per month and FREE access to online classes.

Unlimited Onsite Option: Our unlimited onsite enrollment option is our most popular enrollment option. Unlimited classes per month and FREE access to online classes.

All students will receive temperature check at the door. We will also be requiring masks by all who enter the facility. Please be sure to bring your own water bottles as our water fountains are still shut off.

All students need to wear the academy uniform (tshirt, pants, sash and jacket) to every class (no jacket in the summer). To purchase uniform please see a coach or email us at info@newushu.com to request a uniform. Starting Fall 2021, all students will need to bring their membership cards to all ONSITE classes. You will pick up the card on your first day of classes.

We offer various types of Youth Wushu programs. In order to best determine which program you should be in, please email us at info@newushu.com to request an evaluation.

Every student at the academy, will have a class dojo account. Class dojo accounts are used for our rewards program. Students and families will be able to use points to redeem prizes, discounts and more! We have a prize table on-site at our Burlington location. You can also view our current prize offerings HERE. Students earn points by demonstrating good behavior during classes, practices and/or completing challenges. In order to join our class dojo, please follow the link here. Once you click this link, Join our class and find your child's name in the class roster and follow steps to complete registration.

Sash levels is a rank promotion system for students in our general curriculum. Our sash level begins at Yellow sash and progresses to black sash (see image below). Students will progress and learn various taolu(form), sanda(combat), self defense and tumbling skills of increasing difficulties as they progress.

Yes! For each family member that enrolls tuition will be discounted. 2nd sibling or family member that enrolls will enjoy a 10% discount (applied to the second family member). 3rd sibling or family member will enjoy a 20% discount (applied to both the 2nd and 3rd family member).

Tuition is non-refundable after the session period has started. Tuition refunded before the session starts incurs a 3% processing fee. There are no refunds or returns accepted for equipment and/or uniform purchases. We will allow size exchanges up to 1 week of purchase.

Competition team enrollees require recommendation from at least 2 coaches and a passing score at tryouts. Most recommendations will happen around green sash level but may happen earlier or later in their progression during the general curriculum. Competition team skills are separate from the general curriculum and extremely focused for competition events. By itself, it is not sufficient to progress through the general curriculum attending just competition team practices. Competition team enrollment includes the general curriculum FREE of charge.

In addition to martial arts, our coaching staff is dedicated to teaching our students the importance of etiquette and respectful behavior. Our youth students will learn the 10 academy traits alongside their martial arts training (See below).

Taolu is forms training. Form are choreographed sequence of movements to help students build up their Wushu skills. Within Taolu skills include stances, kicks, punches, jumps, weapons and tumbling skills. Taolu includes both barehand and weapons training. Taolu is great for building up youth strength, coordination, flexibility and endurance.

Sanda is a form of kickboxing. This is the combative element of Wushu. Our general curriculum includes the practice of Sanda. Students will learn various striking, grappling and defensive skills. Like Taolu (forms), Sanda is great for building youth strength, coordination, flexibility and endurance.

Replacement of a membership card is a 15$ fee. If you need a card replaced, please email us at info@newushu.com. Our staff will create a new card and have it ready for pick up at your next class.

Xiaoyi Chen, Head Coach

Coach Xiaoyi Chen started Wushu at the age of 8. She is a graduate of Beijing Sports University and a multiple gold medal winner in International Wushu competitions. She is the current coach of the Wellesley Wushu Team and previously a coach for the Harvard Wushu Team. Coach Xiaoyi's favorite Wushu skill is the tornado kick and aerial cartwheel!

What do you enjoy the most about teaching?
It is most wonderful to have the opportunity to see how much the students grow as they progress through their Wushu journey. Witnessing students not only develop skills in Wushu, but seeing them grow in maturity, and develop improved etiquette because of Wushu is one of the many reasons teaching is so exciting and fulfilling! Our students also all have such fun unique personalities!

Calvin Wang, Head Coach

Coach Calvin Wang started Wushu at the age of 5. He is a multiple gold medal winner in various competitions. Calvin was previously a coach of the Wellesley Wushu Team, Harvard Wushu Team and the Illiniois Wushu Team. Coach Calvin's favorite Wushu skill is the 900 Degree front sweep and 720 butterfly twist!

What do you enjoy the most about teaching?
I am lucky to have the opportunity to witness the growth of so many students, not only in Wushu, but their growth as individuals as they tackle challenges, learn to work with others and develop confidence in themselves. Seeing initial frustration transform into confidence through practice, and confidence transform into eagerness to teach and help one another is incredibly inspiring!

Dennis Chen, Coach

Coach Dennis Chen started Wushu at the age of 12. He has experience in both traditional and contemporary Wushu and was a collegiate Wushu Coach at UCLA. Coach Dennis's favorite Wushu skill is the butterfly kick!

What do you enjoy the most about teaching?
The process of teaching allows both student and coaches the grow together. It is truly satisfying to see a student land their first aerial after months of failed attempts or helping a shy student develop the confidence to perform their routine. I draw a lot of inspiration from the growth of students and I am often taught new ways of looking at old skills through teaching.

Dennis Chen, Coach

Coach Dennis Chen started training martial arts at a young age. He began his martial arts training in traditional martial arts. Coach Dennis's favorite wushu skill is the 360 Lotus Kick into Kneeling stance.

What do you enjoy the most about teaching?
I enjoy passing a sense of Chinese tradition onto the next generation and watching the growth in the students I teach. Wushu is a unique sport and watching my students excel and progress in their martial arts journey is very rewarding. Watching them practice and train together is like a glance into the past of my own wushu journey.

We are looking for student leaders. Student leaders will assist coaches in class activities. Students must be red sash and up only. If you are interested please sign up below. Approval to become student leader requires coaches approval.

Student leaders must assist in at least 1 class per week. Student leaders will help coaches reward points to students, assist with class activities, run temperature checks before the start of class. Student leaders assist coaches in making the class experience better for everyone.

1. Student leaders are expected to arrive on time.

2. Student leaders are expected to set a good example.

3. Student leaders should wear their academy uniforms at all times.

4. Student leaders are expected to be pro-active in their help.

4. Student leaders are expected to show respect to students, families and coaches.

Student leaders will receive a mid session and end of session performance evaluation. This evaluation will provide feedback to student leaders helping them with improving areas that need improvement. Student leaders must achieve a "satisfactory" passing score to receive the student leader discount.

Performance evaluation: student leaders will be scored daily on 5 aspects of their student leader role.

Leaders will be scored 0 or 1 daily on each of these 5 aspects. Leaders who maintain an average of 4.6 or higher will receive a satisfactory score at the end of the session. If a leader is late by more than 5 minutes they will receive a 0 for the day.

Student leaders will receive their retroactive discount (in the form of credits) at the end of each session (Dec in Fall, June in Spring, August in Summer). If you help 1 class per week you will receive a 5% discount. If you help in 2 classes per week you will receive a 10% discount. In order to receive this discount, student leaders must receive a satisfactory rating from all coaches for their role as student leaders. A performance evaluation will be given mid-session to provide feedback to leaders and at the end of each session to determine if you qualify for discount offer.
